Glove compartments are as important part of today’s vehicles as when they became a regular part of a car and truck. Not unlike the ‘junk drawer’ found in every home (come one – you know you have one no matter HOW organized you are) – they are a great catch all for the things you’re not sure where to put but you may find yourself needing at some point during a drive.

For the record, there are actually some organizations that have put serious thought into what you SHOULD keep in your glove box. Check this list created by a national vehicle insurer against what you have available in yours – and adjust accordingly.

*Proper paperwork and identification. It is the most convenient place to keep proof of insurance (vehicle and health – for the driver AND passengers) and some people even carry copies of their living will and power of attorney here as well.

*A flashlight…and extra batteries (make sure they are not expired).

*Handi-wipes and hand sanitizers. These come in handy for many things- including wiping the gasoline smell from your hands after filling up.

*Maps – in case your GPS fails.

*Snacks – for you or your fussy kids if you get caught in traffic and have a hunger attack.

*Small grocery bags that can be used to collect trash in between stops.

*Small toys and books for children or dvd’s– keeping children occupied on longer drives can be an important part of planning a trip with young children.

It is also a good idea to keep a first aide kit handy in the car or the truck.
