TOLL ROADS- GOOD OR BAD?

Toll roads were the topic of consideration at a recent Congressional meeting. One fleet owner of a trucking company decried the literal explosion in rate increases – claiming that planned increases in tolls on the bridges between New York and New Jersey alone will rise 163% by 2015. His testimony was designed to ‘drive home’ the point that this imperils the ‘health’ of the trucking industry as a whole (and the economy at large). Furthermore, trucking industry experts believe the impact of excessive tolls indicate a need for a toll authority – created through Congressional intervention.

What are toll roads exactly? And why do they even exist – when we have thousands of miles of interstate freeway that is more or less funded by taxpayer dollars? Is this …highway robbery?

A toll road – aka turnpike or express toll route (or similar monikers) is a publicly or privately built road that requires a driver to pay a fee, or toll in order to traverse it. In addition, toll bridges and toll tunnels are used by public authorities as well for the purpose of ‘generating revenue’ that is then used for various purposes from retired debt to upkeep and maintenance – and, in some cases, the money simply goes into the state’s general tax coffers.

Traditionally, these fees were collected by workers at strategically placed toll booths along the way – but thanks to modern technology this has made way for automatic or electronic toll collections.

The real truth of the matter is that new roads cost money, either tax dollars or toll dollars- we do not get roads for free.  When States cut back and the Federal Government cuts back on infrastructure- sometimes toll roads are the only way to help reduce the traffic congestion of high traffic areas.

While many don’t like paying the toll it is truly those who use it to pay for it. Many people criticized Washington for taking their money and spending it and then turn around and criticize someone else for not having roads and other needs of the community.

Toll roads have proven that they can get done in fairly short order once they have been approved by the various entities. There is much opposition to toll roads and it is the very same people who also oppose tax revenue going to Washington. There is no free ride when it comes to building roads.
