One of the harder things to do when you are accustomed to being “connected” is to ignore the “ping” of the text message to your smart phone while you are driving. It seems that teenagers as well as adults are drawn to look at their cell phone when they hear the tone ring.

Study after study has proven conclusively that texting while driving can be almost as dangerous as being drunk and driving. Some credible authorities have found that texting while driving can cost a person an average of 3 car lengths of safety cushion. At highway speeds this can literally make a difference between life and death.

Many states have sought to regulate texting and driving for drivers. Unfortunately, Texas passed on the proposition even though the legislature approved a law that was very well drafted and would have limited texting while driving for all Texans. While I do not agree with our governor on this point, it shows the necessity of real leadership by our representatives in making Texas the best it can be.

Some cities and municipalities have passed laws forbidding texting while driving within the city, however the piecemeal approach is rarely effective in making our roadways and families safer in Texas. What is needed is a comprehensive statewide approach to texting limitations while driving.

Commercial truck drivers who are regulated by federal laws are forbidden from using cell phones while driving except in emergency situations and there is good reason for that law. Optimally, a universal standard across all states would ensure a consistent and fair approach to the problem of texting while driving or distracted driving across state lines.

One of the most important governmental functions is to protect families residing in the state and this is an example where Texas has failed to keep up with advances in technology. Call your representatives and asked them to support a ban on texting while driving in Texas.
