Teen Driver Requirements In Texas

Every driver in Texas less than 18 years old must meet certain licensing requirements for a learner or as it is sometimes called a provisional driver’s license and they are also subject to a phase-in of driving responsibilities.

Graduated Driver Licensing

Graduated Driver Licensing is a mechanism to ease in new drivers to the responsibilities of a licensed driver gradually as their skills develop. Basically, the more experience the new driver becomes the more they are able to drive without restriction.

First of all, the new driver must complete a driver education program. Some of these programs are offered at school others by licensed facilities and a family can even save some money by going online and taking the training.

Learner’s permits–a new driver must obtain a learner’s permit that enables them to be accompanied by an adult while driving. They must hold a learner’s permit for at least 6 months before they get their drivers license.

Restricted driving privileges–after a new driver obtains their driver’s license they have a period in which there privileges of driving are restricted. In the year following the issuance of their driver’s license they may not have more than one passenger in the vehicle under the age of 21 (unless they are family member).  Additionally, they may not drive a car between midnight and 5 AM unless it is an emergency or meets other specified requirements.

New drivers may not drive while using a cell phone unless it’s an emergency. This would include texting or cell phone use.

It is very important that in addition to the formal training required to get a drivers license and the testing, that parents and grandparents constantly reinforce safe driving habits starting at an early age.

When your son or daughter turns 13, start talking to them about driving situations as they occur. The more we communicate the importance of seatbelts, what to watch for to avoid an accident and what we expect of them as drivers better chance we have of them coming home safely once they get a drivers license.
