SPEED KILLS

Have you ever gotten a speeding ticket? When you’re pulled over and the police officer is approaching your car are you thinking ‘why me?’ ‘I always get caught.’ ‘I have a good reason to be speeding – I was in a hurry to _____ (fill in the blank).’ ‘Why don’t they stop all the other speeders on the road?’ ‘These cops don’t have anything else to do but stop honest, hardworking taxpayers on their way to _____ (fill in the blank).’

Well, consider the following statistics and maybe you’ll understand that speeding kills.

*Speed is a factor in nearly one-third of all vehicle accident fatalities.

*In a recent year 42,000 people were killed in traffic crashes and almost 3.2 million more were injured. One third of these numbers equates to 14,000 lives lost and over a million injured due to speeding.

  • Research found that when speed limits were raised by many states, travel speeds increased and motor vehicle fatalities went up significantly on interstate highways in those states.
  • Crash forces on impact double with every 10 mile per hour increase in speed above 50 miles per hour. As crash forces increase, so does one’s chances of being killed or seriously injured in a crash.

•Young drivers (under 30 years old) are more likely to speed than other drivers. Of all drivers involved in fatal crashes, young males are most likely to speed. The relative proportion of speeding-related fatal crashes decreases with increasing driver age and that seems like common sense.

Slow down – the life you save may be your own.  If you have teen drivers consider a computer chip to monitor your teens speeds. They are dropping in price and if it keeps their speed down well worth it at any price.
