Recent Injury and Fatality Accidents in the Austin Area

*Late last month a semi-truck traveling near Highway 71 was involved in a multi-vehicle accident that resulted in the rig actually flipping over. Thankfully, no one was severely injured and – to date- no final decision has been made as to the cause of the accident.

*Late last month a preschooler playing outside his home was struck by a truck and killed. The driver attempted to flee but was stopped not far from the scene by several witnesses. Charges are pending – no further information has been made available at this time.

Other accidents include a hit and run drunk driving collision that claimed two lives several months ago – a case that was recently solved when police finally arrested a suspect for the crime – and a motorcyclist that was also killed in a smash up with a semi-truck.

While Austin may be showing the beginning signs of declining injuries and fatalities as a result of vehicle collisions – it should be noted that a speed limit increase in recent months might cause these figures to ‘turn around’. Speed is a major factor in many accidents.

Summertime also is a time for caution driving on the Austin streets. Holidays such as the Fourth of July and long weekends tend to have an abundance of drinking or drunk drivers on the roadways during the evening hours. Weekends particularly in the wee hours of the morning can be especially dangerous due to drunk driving potential.

Additionally, when the football season starts the tendency is to celebrate a victory with some libation and too much of a good thing can lead to very bad result. Drunk driving accidents in Austin are actually on the incline despite the recent crackdowns tried to curb the situation.

Many communities such as Houston have gone to a “no refusal weekend” which allows police officers to get a warrant very quickly should someone suspected of drinking and driving refuse to take a breath test. The conviction rate for DWI cases when a warrant was obtained for a blood test runs fairly high in Houston.

Many people find policies such as the no refusal weekend to the offensive to the sense of freedom, there is no doubt that when utilized it is effective in obtaining convictions for people who are driving with alcohol concentrations above the legal limit.

Drive with caution.
