The Occupational and Safety & Health Administration, a subsidiary of the U.S. Department of Labor, has devoted a section of their website specifically to ‘fall protection’. According to statistics “falls are among the most common causes of serious work-related injuries and deaths”.

The problem is not explicit to one area of the workforce either. Falls as a category of danger occur in non-construction-related as well as construction work. With regard to fall protection activities not associated with the construction industry most often safety standards to guard against falls are found within that general industry including such occupations as shipyard employment, marine terminals and longshoremen.

USHA addresses the appropriate way to utilize equipment such as ladders, scaffolds, platforms, skid, elevators (as well as a wealth of other apparatus) in a manner that will be most successful in preventing a work-related spill. In addition, they advise how to accomplish their responsibilities in all climactic conditions – of particular importance to persons who work outdoors.

OSHA has separate safety standards that address the issue of falls. Beyond the general and expected requisites the guidelines speak to such situations as the use of derricks, underground construction, stairways, and the erection component of the industry. In their thoroughness, OSHA includes supplementary information about additional resources and training.
