Adults and teens alike tend to have some misconceptions about drunk driving that can prove dangerous if not addressed. What follows are several of the more common ‘drunk driving myths’ – and the truth behind them.

*Eating will combat the effects of alcohol and help the ‘drinker’ remain sober (False).
Certainly eating does not HURT when one is drinking but it is not an effective defense against increasing intoxication. In fact, the only thing that does ‘cure’ inebriation is…time.

*Coffee will sober me up – and I will be able to drive safely then (False – see previous response).
Drinking coffee will only make you jittery – it can’t sober you up, increase alertness or restore impaired judgment caused by too much alcohol.

*I only drink beer – no hard liquor – so I should be fine to drive (False).
Alcohol is alcohol and there is as much alcohol in a single 12 ounce can as in a shot or two of whiskey.

*Taking a blood alcohol content test will clear up any question of whether or not a person is too intoxicated to be driving. Alcohol breath tests are a reliable measure of the concentration of alcohol in a person’s blood stream (dubbed ‘BAC’ – it stands for blood alcohol content) (Maybe true – maybe false).
Alcohol breath testers don’t actually measure the amount of alcohol in a person’s bloodstream. In order to do THAT a sample of blood must be drawn for analysis. The ‘breathalyzer’ instead measures alcohol in the breath as a way of estimating the concentration of alcohol in the blood. Not all states permit their use (but most do).

*Even if I do decide to drink and drive – I won’t get caught.

Maybe true – maybe false- but why take the chance?
