The dynamics of driving can be confusing at times. Perhaps nowhere is this more true than in a situation where one is required to ‘yield’ the right of way to another driver. There are multiple situations in which this may occur – and when it does you can expect to see a ‘yield’ sign somewhere ‘nearby’ as a warning that the other driver is afforded the ‘driving precedence’ over you. ‘Failure to yield’ has resulted in multiple accidents – consider the following statistics.

*The National Safety Council statistics reveal that an estimated 14% of all fatal motor vehicle accidents were the result of a driver’s failure to yield the right of way. In a recent year this translated to more than seven thousand fatalities because a driver failed to yield – as required by law.

*Failure to yield the right of way is the second most frequent violation that results in fatal accidents.

What are some of the most common driving scenarios which may require you to yield to other motorists?

*A 4-way stop. Wait until everyone is not moving before proceeding. This may not only be courteous – it may be lifesaving.

*When entering a highway – the other drivers have the ‘right of way’ – it is your responsibility to yield and then enter safely.

In fact, most experts believe that in any case where the right-of-way may be in question – defer to the other driver. Failure to yield is NOT the same as ‘backing down’ – yielding is just a good defensive driving practice.
