We have suffered more than our fair share of fires in Travis County and the Austin area over the past few years. The average citizen may give little thought to the requirements to become one of these first-responders – so I have compiled a list of pertinent facts about firefighting in Austin and Travis County.

*Texas firefighters must pass certification requirements set by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. They must complete a basic training course that ends with a written and physical test to ensure they have the strenuous physical abilities needed for the job. Too, they must hold certification in emergency medical procedures.

* Fire officials work collaboratively to highlight steps the public can take to lessen the risks of becoming victims — clear brush, mow grass, have an evacuation plan. The Texas terrain and weather brought on seasonally (hot, dry, windy) guarantees that we will always be at risk – and must be proactive in preventing fires.

*OSHA standards require employers to provide proper fire exits that are easily visible and clear, firefighting equipment and some basic training in its use, and employee training to prevent fire deaths and injuries in the workplace.

*Both Travis County and the city of Austin proper have websites devoted to the services offered by their fire departments as well as up-to-date information about fires and fire safety. I have included a link to each below. I hope you will take a moment to visit the sites – for their own edification. Often there is not a second chance with a fire.
